About Rocky Mountain Racers
The Rocky Mountain Racers are a high performance cross country ski and biathlon team based out of the Calgary/Canmore area (Alberta, Canada). Athletes in this program receive high quality coaching, training and race support services in their respective sports. The club is diverse group of athletes from early teens to mature athletes in their thirties. Although many athletes live in the Calgary/Canmore area, RMR also supports athletes throughout Alberta, other provinces; and, from time to time, athletes from other countries. Athletes vary from seasoned veterans to young guns in the sports of cross country skiing and biathlon. All these athletes train together, the veterans' mentoring the younger athletes while the younger athletes help keep things fun. The binding factor essential to making the team work well is that all the athletes are striving to become the best skiers and athletes that they can be.
RMR athletes dedicate themselves to training year round in pursuit of their goals. Starting in May they commence dryland training with running, biking , hiking, roller skiing, and paddling to keep in top shape. To maintain their "racers edge", they compete in many events over the summer months including triathlons, trail running races, and special team events like the 24 Hours of Adrenalin. In these events RMR athletes are always pushing themselves to their limits and are often on the podium or close to it. In addition to a variety of tough weekly workouts, the off-season also involves several planned camps 2 to 3 at the Becky Scott High Altitude Training Centre, located on the Haig Glacier in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park.
When the snow flies, the RMR team is hard at work traveling across Canada and the United States following the national race circuits. Through the winter months the athletes are fine tuning their ski technique, building their high performance racing experience, and some are aiming to secure a berth on one of the overseas trips organized and supported by the National Ski Team programs.
