History: 1999-2000
by Mike Carleton, RMR President in 1999-2000
During the 1999 / 2000 season RMR was a dominant force in Nordic sports with many significant achievements, at Provincial, National, NORAM, and International levels. The athletes are identified below, with some sample individual highlights.
As a team, RMR was the number 1 ranked club at the Canadian Junior* Cross Country Championships at Thunder Bay, the Number 3 ranked club at the Cross Country National* Championships at Canmore / Mt. Shark, and contributed significantly to Alberta being the Number 1 ranked division at the Biathlon National Championships at Fort Kent, Maine.
* Prior to 2002 National Championships for cross country skiing were separate for Juniors and Seniors.
Coaches and athletes overcame many challenges and adversities throughout the season, both individually and as a team. Everyone can be proud of what was accomplished.
Due to a drastic warming in Thunder Bay, the 2000 Canadian National Championships was moved at the last minute to be run at Mt. Shark. As the dates for the Nationals overlapped with our annual Sharkfest, our club, with help from many many volunteers throughout the Alberta Nordic community, we also hosted Nationals, Alberta Championships, and the University / College Championships.
Great appreciation for this wonderful season went out to the athletes, to our lead coaches at the time, Scott Dymond (Head Coach) and Richard Boruta (Biathlon Coach), to the many volunteers from other clubs that helped with the adhoc combination of major events held at the end of the season; and to all of our sport colleagues, to the sponsors, and to all the parents and volunteers who made this a season to remember.
